The Veil Nebula

The Veil Nebula (The Veil Loop)

A cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus. It was created by a supernova (probably 20 times more massive than our Sun), which exploded ca. 8,000 years ago.
The whole Veil Loop includes:

  • The Western Veil (Caldwell 34), consisting of NGC 6960 (the “Witch’s Broom”, “Finger of God”, Lacework Nebula, “Filamentary Nebula”) near the foreground star 52 Cygni (right part of the image);
  • The Eastern Veil (Caldwell 33), whose brightest area is NGC 6992 and NGC 6995 (known as “Network Nebula”), visible at the right side of the image, and
  • Pickering’s Triangle (or Pickering’s Triangular Wisp), brightest at the north central edge of the loop.
